Statement of the Artist:

Home is important!  My home is Wyoming!  Wyoming is where I live, explore, love, and draw inspiration.  I create my art based on experiences in life.  My work reflects my time outdoors, hunting, fishing, hiking, camping and seeing.  I use those images collected in the Wyoming outdoors to piece visions together in my work.

I came out of art school with the thought that I would be a print-maker.  I still practice some printmaking and enjoy it very much.  Over the last 5 years my art has taken a turn and become much more experiential.  The paintings I make are an attempt at playing and manipulating paint and canvas to create an emotional, rendering of the wild things and creatures I see in the 307.  I find myself intentionally using thick, painterly brush strokes to create texture and life on my canvases.  This is a long way separated from my printmaking beginnings.  Although my paintings have a loose feeling, my techniques still stem from those detailed thoughts that one would find in a print-maker’s mind.

I work in series.  These series are important to me mentally and I think they are important to my audience.  A painting can be successful on its own but when there is a series of related works it can truly tell a story and show the commitment from the artist.  I feel that when I work in a series, I can explore and complete an idea to its full extent.

Painting Icons

My work is often inspired by the outdoors of Wyoming. It is easy to be drawn to the iconic wildlife found in and around Wyoming. The Bison has become one of my favorite subjects to paint. With it’s stoic, unmistakable shape, the bison is an obvious choice for me to explore the shapes of the west.

“Art is much less important than life, but what a poor life without it.”

Robert Motherwell
